The Murphysboro CUSD 186 5th Grade Band is co-taught by Mr. Williams and Mr. Moreland at both Elementary Schools. In addition to receiving a lesson each week, 5th grade band students meet periodically as a full band at their respective school to work on beginning band techniques. Both schools are then combined to perform on the Instrumental Music Department’s winter and spring concert. Students also perform for their school during the Instrumental Music Department’s elementary recruiting tour. 5th Grade Band begins in mid-September with a recruitment/lesson sign-up evening at the Middle School, which includes an instrumental display by Shivelbine’s Music Store. The band also serves as the “Cadet Band” for those students who begin band late in Middle School, and who are not yet ready to be in the Middle School Band.
